Heat transfer vinyl will work on a large variety of materials. Light and dark colors, cotton, polyester and blends. Most materials that can go under a heat press will work with heat transfer vinyl.
When working with tumblers or mugs you will want to use adhesive vinyl, rather than heat-applied vinyl. However, these are not dishwasher safe as you are essentially appling a sticker to a mug. Most mugs are going to be decorated with sublimation.
